Living a life well lived ...

One of my kids' and my aikido teachers just forwarded me a link to an "important" lecture, about living a life well lived. Say that three times fast ;-> The kind where when you reach "the end" and look back you can say "It was good".

Check out http://youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo

After watching it I ordered DVD's to hand out at: https://www.randypauschdvd.com/

And a podcast: http://www.virginia.edu/flashaudio/2007/randy_pausch.mp3

Not sure if the book will be as powerful as the lecture or not: www.TheLastLecture.com

Hacking the Sennheiser 595 cord and jack

The Sennheiser 595 headphone is great. I love the audio quality.

BUT ... I hate 10 miles of cord with a 1/4" jack on the end. Connecting it to my computer or Touch is just a pain. Sure it's just needs an adapter. But that means an inch and a quarter of jack and another inch and a quarter of adapter. 'bout as big as half a Touch! And then there's that 20 miles of cord getting in the way. Yea, I know I said 10 miles up top. That what it feels like. Just keeps growing and getting longer and longer.

What to do ... easy, cut the cord and replace the jack. Went to the goog to find out how to do this. No luck, no one's posted any info. Well, couldn't be that hard ...

It's not. Cut the cord to whatever length you like. I went long enough to go into my pocket. You'll see four wires. Signal and ground for each side.

Umm ... so which is what? I stripped the plastic from the jack so you can see them better. Red is right, white is left, black and blue ground.

Quick check on goog to find the layout of a stereo audio jack. Bottom is ground. You can see the black and blue wires soldered directly to it.

Middle section of the jack is the right channel. It runs inside the bottom jack segment and comes out beneath it. In the picture you can see an insulator to the right of the ground section and the gold color of the middle section to the right of that with the red wire soldered to it.

Top of the jack is the left channel. It runs inside the middle section and comes out to the far right in the picture. I couldn't strip enough of the plastic to show it clearly, but the white conductor is soldered to it.

So, once ya know all that attaching a new small jack is easy. Just strip the jacket on the cord back about an inch. Then strip each wire back about an 1/8". And solder. Black and blue to the ground connector. Red in the middle. White to the far end. Before soldering I put a small piece of heatshrink on each wire to make sure nothing shorted. Make sure to push back the bit of heatshrink while you solder so it doesn't prematurely shrink. After soldering push the heatshrink over the solder joint and shrink it.

Next step is getting brave enough to totally replace the 595's cord with one of those iPod style cords with real skinny jacks. To do that I'll need to open up the left can and figure out how to remove the original cord and replace with the iPod style cord. Should be easy. But should sometimes isn't and at $200 a pop I'm not ready to try it yet ...
